Context

A municipal infrastructure department was tracking 200+ active projects across spreadsheets with no spatial view of where budget and schedule risk was concentrated.

Approach

We built a full-stack web application — Next.js frontend, PostgreSQL/PostGIS database, Mapbox GL interactive map — allowing planners to see every active project's location, budget status, and schedule health on a single map, with drill-down detail views and CSV export for board reporting.

Outcome

The dashboard is now the department's primary project-tracking tool, replacing the spreadsheet workflow entirely within two months of launch.

Approach

Methodology

Requirements workshops with planning and finance teams; PostgreSQL/PostGIS schema design for project, budget, and schedule data; Next.js/React frontend with Mapbox GL interactive mapping; role-based access control for planners vs. finance vs. public-facing read-only views; CSV/PDF export for board reporting.

Outcome

Results & Outcomes

  • Replaced spreadsheet-based tracking for 200+ active infrastructure projects
  • Reduced monthly board-report preparation time by an estimated 70%
  • Gave finance and planning teams a shared, single source of truth
Constraint

Challenges

Migrating 3 years of historical spreadsheet data with inconsistent project-status naming required a data-cleaning pass and a controlled-vocabulary status field to prevent future drift.

The web GIS dashboard they built is now how our entire planning department tracks active infrastructure projects.
