What's the difference between HEC-RAS 1D and 2D?

1D modeling represents flow along a single direction (typically the channel centerline) and is faster and sufficient for channel conveyance and structure analysis. 2D modeling solves flow across a full grid or mesh, capturing complex floodplain, urban, and overland flow patterns that 1D can't represent — at higher computational cost.
